Reliquary cross of the Holy Cross, so-called Byzantine Cross

The relics are enshrined in the intersections of this reliquary cross. Its heterogeneous character is observed through the cross itself, the stem and knop on which it rests and the truncated pyramid that serves as the foot. Eight Byzantine enamelled medallions of the Comnenian period (11th – 12th centuries) confer a particularly original aspect to the work. These were probably recuperated during the sacking of the city in 1204. The origin of the cross is unknown. It is thought to have belonged to Jacques de Vitry who donated it to Oignies. Only the foot would have been made in the priory workshop.
