Reliquaries

Reliquaries account for roughly half of the collection. Reliquaries fulfil the role of making saints’ relics accessible to the faithful by enshrining them in ostentatious objects.  During the 13th century, relics were the object of a particularly vibrant cult and they were believed to emit supernatural powers.
