Oignies evangeliary or lectionary

Dating from the middle of the 13th century, the evangeliary contains 178 sheets of parchment. Beautifully decorated, all of the texts have all been written by the same hand. The document was destined to be read in public and reserved for liturgical use. Whilst it is likely that Hugo did some of the decoration, it is not certain that the entire manuscript was his work. Hugo is represented tonsured and kneeling in a humble attitude, offering the evangeliary to his community.
