Phylactery of Saint Hubert

Decorated with five large rock crystal cabochons and precious stones, this work has on its reverse side Saint Hubert, wearing his mitre and holding a crosier that ends in a spear. The execution is of good quality, but it is possible that the person who made it, if it was not Hugo himself, used Hugo’s sketchbooks to copy it.

A phylactery is a reliquary, whose origin lies in the Greek word that designated the amulet that Christians in the Orient liked to wear around their neck.
